Brain Food | My First Cookbook!

An educational cookbook about the science of eating for brain health made simple!

During my final semester in the Human Kinetics program at the University of Guelph, I had the opportunity to complete a research project on knowledge transfer and mobilization in human health. For my project, I chose a topic that I felt not only needed to be better understood amongst our populations but involved something I was passionate about which was cooking.

Over the last decade, the rising epidemic of neurodegenerative diseases such as Dementia and Alzheimer's disease have become a huge concern amongst our aging populations. Although there is no cure to these diseases and pharmaceutical treatments are very limited, there are things we can control such as our diet that can greatly impact our brain health and longevity especially as we age.

Recent research suggests that consuming foods that are rich sources of particular nutrients can reduce the development and progression of neurodegenerative diseases and overall improve brain function. These findings are bringing us closer to figuring out how we can prevent neurodegenerative diseases however, there is one small problem... does society know this information or have access to it in a way they can understand?

A lot of information about our mental and physical health is available on the internet however, the format and language it is presented in tends to be difficult to understand especially for those with little to no background in the area of research. In general, there is a gap in the transfer of scientific research to society in a way that is easy to understand and relatable for all individuals to incorporate into their everyday lives. That is why I created Brain Food.

Brain Food is an educational cookbook that not only teaches you about how certain foods can optimize your brain health but presents it in a way that is comprehendible for anybody. When I was creating this cookbook, I went through numerous scientific research articles, complied the information then translated the acquired knowledge into plain language. This was then tested on many different stakeholders to ensure that the knowledge was appropriately mobilized in a comprehendible manner. I then got into the kitchen and created several different recipes based on my research findings.

This cookbook is intended to help individuals understand why our diet is important for our brain health and potentially increase its awareness amongst society. I hope you enjoy it and please share with me your thoughts and which recipes are your favourite!
